Position: Transaction Coder
Location: Ann Arbor, MI

Job Description:

Translates hospital charge description master detail into transaction codes using proprietary methodologies both in and out of areas of clinical specialty. Leverage clinical expertise regarding classification enhancements and updates required for procedures and products new in the marketplace.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Reviews client charge code detail and determines the appropriate placement and categorization of each item within the transaction-level coding structure in or out of areas of clinical specialty per departmental guidelines and conventions.
  • Participates in coding quality control program; performs routine and random code reviews; reviews work of contract personnel; provides feedback on quality/consistency issues.
  • Provides feedback in area of clinical expertise regarding classification enhancements and updates required for procedures and products new in the marketplace.
  • Drafts documents, support materials, crosswalks, and procedures related to the transaction coding process including classification overviews and annual or more frequent code updates in area of clinical expertise.
  • Serves as a liaison with hospital personnel to resolve issues that impact transaction coding and its use in Watson Health offerings and to instruct clients on coding concepts as needed.
  • Participates with colleagues, internal clients, and developers to resolve problems and improve coding tools, reports, and other functions that impact coding quality and efficiency.
  • Provides input for data analysts and other colleagues to ensure appropriate use of transaction data in Watson Health offerings and to train on coding concepts as needed.
  • Participates in the scheduling of other transaction-level coding functions and in executing data movement processes that support coding tools and underlying structures.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and maintains ongoing learning process of new technologies/discoveries in area of specialty to maintain clinical credential.

Required Professional and Technical Expertise:
  • 3-5 years of experience in specialty credential with clinical experience.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have strong organizational and quality assurance skills.
  • Must be analytical, consistent and display good judgment.
  • Must be able to work effectively with internal and external clients, on an individual basis, and as a team player.
  • Must possess multitasking ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously without sacrificing quality
  • Must be self-directed and motivated, requiring minimal management assistance to accomplish day-to-day activities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Professional and Technical Expertise:
  • Registered Nurse
  • Clinical experience in one or more areas (OR, Ambulatory Surgery, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiology, Endoscopy, or Orthopedics)
